The Griffins missed the playoffs for the past two seasons. That trend appears to be coming to an end.

Grand Rapids beat the Belleville Senators 3-0 Friday for their ninth win in their last 12 games. The Griffins are 18-14-4-1 and are in third place in the Central Division. They are only four points out of second place. It seems likely the Griffins will be among playoff qualifiers.

The key has been steady goaltending, strong coaching from Dan Watson and prospects like Jonatan Berggren, Carter Mazur, Simon Edvinsson, Marco Kasper and others stepping up. Berggren had two goals an an assist Friday to lead the offense in the win over Belleville. He leads the team with 31 points in 29 games. Mazur already has 11 goals and Edvinsson and Kasper have 21 and 20 points respectively. Other veterans, such as Austin Czarnik and Zach Aston-Reese, are also making significant contributions.

The Grand Rapids team plays Belleville again tonight looking for its fifth consecutive win. Game-time is 7 p.m.

This is not the best time for the Red Wings to meet the Vegas Golden Knights (tonight, 8 p.m., Little Caesars Arena). The Golden Knights have earned points in six consecutive games (5-0-1) and seven of their last eight games. Jonathan Marchessault had a hat trick last night as Golden Knights hammered the New York Rangers 5-2 Friday night. Adin Hill played in goal for Vegas. That could mean Logan Thompson could face Detroit tonight. Coming off a shutout, Alex Lyon should be in net for Detroit.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Now open at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit.

Located on the second floor of the museum is an immersive experience where kids can problem solve, and let their imagination run wild as they play with Daniel and his friends.

If you’re older you may remember the popular character as a puppet of television icon, Mr. Rogers.

Others will recognize him from the animated series on PBS.

”The puppet of off Mr. Rogers was really all about kindness, and all about empathy and all about feelings. Daniel Tiger is absolutely a perfect puppet to talk about the emotions that we all have, but Daniel is a way to articulate it to children," Maggie Lancaster, the CEO of Play at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum, said.

The temporary exhibit will be at the museum until May 12th.

This morning there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony with sponsors PNC bank.

“I would challenge all the parents out there. You don't know how much your kid loves Daniel Tiger. And that excitement will translate into a day at the museum here at the Children's Museum, where they'll walk away smarter and more curious and want to learn more," Sean Welsh, President of PNC Bank of West Michigan, said.

This weekend the museum has extended hours.

It’s open from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Charlie Elzaghir is enthusiastic about his Mediterranean restaurant, Sahara Bistro.

“You have to have that passion for food,” Elzaghir told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press. “I need people that want to work from their heart ...and I have a wonderful staff.”

Sahara Bistro opened about one and a half years ago serving a menu based on Lebanese cuisine at 5260 Northland Dr. NE, Suite C, in Grand Rapids.

As Elzaghir was talking with MLive on Tuesday, Jan. 16, restaurant manager Adelin E. Burgos served lunchtime customers while chefs Zack Drake and Nasser Issa prepared food with a “home-cooked” feel.

“We’ve become somewhat of a destination now,” Elzaghir said. “I talk to a lot of the customers and we get people from Grand Haven, from Battle Creek, from Detroit.”

He gives credit to his staff and their close attention to quality and consistency.

The produce is fresh and hand-picked, Elzaghir said.

“One of our signature items, which is extremely popular, is the cheese sambousek and the gyro cheese sambousek,” he said.

Elzaghir said cheese sambousek, a traditional Lebanese cheese roll, is typically made with halloumi or Akkawi cheese, but Sahara Bistro uses pepper jack cheese to give it more of a “kick.”

“We kind of changed it around and we use a feta and pepper jack mix with parsley and sumac,” he said. “It gives it a similar taste but it’s more robust.”

The gyro cheese sambousek has the same ingredients as the cheese sambousek, but with gyro meat.

Cheese sambousek (six pieces of crispy fried pepper-jack cheese egg rolls, stuffed with Sahara Bistro’s special cheese mix) is priced at $12. Six pieces of the gyro cheese sambousek goes for $14.

“It’s very tasty for all ages,” he said.

Elzaghir said when his family hosts dinner parties, sambousek is the first thing they bring to the table.

For customers not familiar with Mediterranean food, Elzaghir said chicken shawarma (grilled chicken marinated with the house mix of spices and “aromatic” seasoning grilled until tender) is a good menu item to try.

The chicken shawarma pita wrap (with Arabic style pickles and served with the house garlic sauce) goes for $9, and the chicken shawarma dinner plate (served with basmati rice and choice of side - hummus, baba ghannouj or house salad) is $22.

Dinner plates from the menu include Sujouk Kebab (spicy ground beef kebab with red pepper paste, herbs, and Sahara Bistro’s special spice mix) for $23. All dinner plates are served with cardamom-infused basmati rice, and a choice of house salad, hummus or baba ghannouj.

Families or groups can share shish combos.

“Shish Combo for Two” (one kafta, one shish kebab, one chicken kafta and a side of chicken shawarma with hummus, rice, and salad) goes for $44; “Shish Combo for Three to Five” (two shish kebabs, one kafta, one sujouk, two chicken kafta, and choice of chicken shawarma or gyro with hummus, rice, and salad) goes for $99; and “Shish Kebab for Eight to 10” (four shish kebabs, four chicken kafta, two kafta, two sujouk, and choice of chicken shawarma or gyro with hummus, rice, and salad) goes for $199.

Orders can be modified. The menu has gluten free and vegetarian options as well.

For example, chicken shawarma can become gluten free by being served over hummus or a salad.

Baba Ghannouj (fire-roasted eggplant dip with yogurt, lemon, garlic, and tahini) for $7 is one of Elzaghir’s personal favorites. Also for $7, is fresh mint lemonade (lemonade in ice and blended with fresh mint) which Elzaghir said has been well received with his customers.

“People come from all over, just for this drink,” he said.

Although the restaurant focuses on Lebanese-inspired cuisine, customers can also find gourmet burgers on the menu.

Sahara Bistro’s burgers include the Sahara classic cheeseburger (house burger sauce, cheddar cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, and crispy onions on a toasted brioche bun) for $14 and “Charlie’s Nashville Hot Chicken Burger” (6-ounce chicken patty with bacon, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and “spicy boom boom sauce” on a toasted brioche bun) for $15.

All burger patties are 6 ounces and ground in-house. Fries and soft drink can be added for an extra $4.

Lunch specials (Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) include the pita special (any pita from the menu with choice of salad or soup and a fountain drink) for $14; or a plate special (any plate menu item served with cardamom-infused basmati rice, choice of house salad or soup, and a fountain drink) for $17. Shish Kebab is subject to additional charges.

Desserts include Lebanese rice pudding for $7, baklava (three pieces of crispy phyllo dough layered with butter, mixed ground nuts, and rose water-infused sugar syrup) for $6 and Nutella pistachio cheesecake (New York-style cheesecake, topped with Nutella spread and crushed pistachios) for $8.

Elzaghir was born in the U.S., after his Lebanese parents moved first to Liberia, then the U.S., in the early 1980s.

His wife, Maha, was born and raised in Lebanon. They met while Elzaghir was visiting Lebanon.

Maha’s cooking inspired Elzaghir to use pepper jack cheese in Sahara Bistro’s sambousek recipe.

Elzaghir said his wife, mother and mother-in-law are all excellent cooks.

“I think the best source for (Sahara Bistro’s) recipes, and for the food, and for everything - I would say is to the mothers,” he said. “I’m fortunate enough that my mom took the time to teach me.”

In the next few weeks, Elzaghir plans to remodel Sahara Bistro’s dining room. He wants his customers to feel at home.

“I want people, when they come in here, to feel like they’re either in their home, or somebody else’s home where they’re invited,” he said.

Some Sahara Bistro customers already do feel at home.

An elderly couple donated copper pieces that are now displayed inside the restaurant.

“These items had been in their family for generations, they told me they (copper pieces) were at least 100-150 years old,” Elzaghir said. “They were downsizing and felt (Sahara Bistro) would be the perfect place for these pieces.”

“That was very, very nice of them, just for coming in one time.”

The restaurant does a lot of catering business, such as company lunches and weddings.

Sahara Bistro has many more menu items including gyros and falafels.

WEST MICHIGAN — The forecast from Meteorologist Reece Cole: Scattered light rain showers are the story for West Michigan overnight Saturday. Cloudy skies, gloomy conditions, and areas of fog are on tap for Sunday morning, too. Early light rain is expected with another system tracking southeast of Grand Rapids and will bring some areas light showers tonight and Sunday morning. A few snowflakes may mix in too, but no accumulations are expected. We will watch for possible flooding as snow continues to melt quickly and ice jams are possible along area rivers this weekend and early next week. A FLOOD WATCH is issued for Sunday evening along the Grand River near Comstock Park and Belmont area. A FLOOD WARNING is in effect for the Grand River near Portland. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Specialty doughnut shop Bro’s Doughs in Grand Rapids is for sale.

Bro’s Doughs first opened along the Beltline near Knapp Street around four years ago, before expanding in 2023 with a second location next to the Starbucks on Fuller Avenue near I-196. It offers made-to-order mini-doughnuts with toppings like apple crisp and maple bacon.

The listing for the business advertises a “highly profitable” business with high margins and repeat customers. But the owners, Brodie and Meghan Hock, are ready to pursue other interests and spend more time with their kids.

Cemetery ban: Township and couple clash over green burial project

“There’s not enough time to do everything we want to do,” the owners shared in an email with News 8. “Our kids are young and we’re hoping to be able to follow through on those other interests and spend more time with family and our church.”

They say the decision is “bittersweet,” but they’re excited for what’s next for both the business and their family.

There have been multiple interested buyers, they said, including “a few different groups of people” who are contemplating making an offer. They think the business could sell soon.

Brodie and Meghan Hock hope to sell the two locations together and plan on sticking around during the transition to help the new owner.

Bro’s Doughs customers have “been very supportive,” they say.

“Thankfully over the past (four plus) years we have gotten to know many people and it’s nice to feel their support for the future of Bro’s and for us as a family,” they wrote.
